How to Teach Active Listening & Communication Skills to Your Child

Active listening and communication skills are essential in building strong relationships and enhancing collaboration among individuals. Teaching these skills requires a combination of strategies that can help learners understand the importance of effective communication and develop the necessary skills.

One effective way to teach active listening is to model the behavior and provide feedback. This involves demonstrating active listening in real-life situations and giving children feedback on their own listening skills.

Another approach is to use role-playing exercises, where children can practice active listening and communication skills in a safe and supportive environment. I do this by sitting quietly with the child and listen to what they say, then repeat back to them what I think I have heard to make surev I have unbderstood what they . Then I answer ad ask them to repeat back what they have heard, and so on. This gives you the time to correct any misunderstandings and rephrase so complete understanding can ba had on both sides.

It’s also important to teach children how to ask open-ended questions, paraphrase what they have heard, say it back to you and provide constructive feedback. The ability to use these skills can help them to communicate more effectively and to build stronger relationships with others. Open ended questions promote conversational skills.

In summary, teaching active listening and communication skills requires a combination of modeling, feedback, role-playing, and instruction. With these strategies, learners can develop the skills they need to communicate effectively and build strong relationships in both personal and professional settings.
